The MOOC Case Book tells the stories of IT and e-learning practitioners, faculty, and students who faced challenges during the design, development, implementation, or participation in a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). The MOOC Case Book can also serve as a handbook to guide administrators, IT professionals, instructional designers, and faculty in the planning, development, and implementation of successful MOOC initiatives.

Joseph Rene Corbeil is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He earned his doctoral degree in Education-Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Instructional Technology from the University of Houston, and a Master of Education in Educational Technology from The University of Texas at Brownsville. For over 17 years, he has developed and taught fully web-based undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in educational technology, and developed the first fully online undergraduate specialization in Educational Technology in Texas. He has published articles in numerous journals and contributed chapters to books on innovations in e-learning and distance education. He has earned several awards, including the 2007 EDUCAUSE Quarterly Contribution of the Year and the 2011 Selected Papers for the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning. In 2012, his contributions to teaching excellence were recognized with the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.

Maria Elena Corbeil, Associate Professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, has a doctoral degree in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston, a Masters degree in Education from The University of Texas at Brownsville, and a graduate certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from the University of Florida. For over 15 years, she has developed and taught fully online undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral educational technology courses. She is also the program coordinator for two fully online undergraduate educational technology specializations. She has focused on maintaining teaching excellence and program quality through the mentoring and training of online full time and adjunct faculty. She presents at conferences and has numerous awards and publications on e-learning and innovations in educational technology. In 2011, she was awarded the International Association for Computer Information Systems’ Ben Bauman Teaching Excellent Award.

Badrul H. Khan is an author, educator, and consultant in the field of e-learning and educational technology. He is the author of the best-selling book Web Based Instruction, which in 1997 paved the way for the field of e-learning. He has over 20 years experience developing state-of-the art e-learning environments for education, corporate, and government settings. He has served as a consultant to e-learning related projects for the World Bank, UNDP, NATO, USAID, Asian Development Bank, and other higher education institutions and corporations in the United States and abroad.
